This article explains step-by-step how to use Conversion Gold on a site powered by Jonathan Leger's $7 Secrets Scripts. (Note: if you haven't yet purchased $7 Secrets, click here to learn more. Amazingly powerful report and script, costing you only $7).

Note: If you are interested in more general setup instructions, that can be used for any type of site, try this article.

Three Types of Conversions

Conversion Gold 2 is works very well for sites selling information products using the $7 Scripts. To maximize the power of the $7 Secrets system, you will have 3 conversion goals. A conversion goal is a specific action that you want visitors to take. The three conversion goals are:

  1. Buy $7 Product - The first thing you want visitors to do is to buy the $7 product
  2. Opt-in to Email List - After buying the product, visitors get sent to the squeeze page, where they can opt-in to your email list. List building is a major goal of the $7 Secrets system.
  3. Buy One-Time-Offer (OTO) Product - Finally, you want the visitor to purchase your one-time (or back-end) offer product.

Of course, its great when you can get a single visitors to take all 3 actions above, but that does always happen. Conversion Gold will help you track each of the above conversion goals, as well as information about where each visitor came from (referring site, referring affiliate, country, state, city, keywords used, etc.)

Setting Up Conversion Gold

Now we will go through the steps to setup Conversion Gold for your $7 Secrets site.

Step 1 - Get Tracking Code

After logging in to Conversion Gold, click the "Get Tracking Code" menu link. You should see something like this:

There are fields for "Campaign" and "Tags", both are optional:

Campaign - You can enter the name of a campaign to track visitors by. For example, if you are creating separate landing pages for various traffic sources (ads, adwords, etc.) or testing different versions of you landing pages, you can use different campaigns to compare performance and conversions.

Tags - Tags are similar to campaigns. You may want to group several campaigns under a single tag. For example, you could use the tag 'ebooks' for each of your ebook campaigns, yet still use many different campaigns for each book or landing page.

For now, leave both of these blank, and simply hit the "Get Tracking Code" button.

After clicking the "Get Tracking Code" button, the tracking code will be displayed in a text box, similar to the one below:

Now you can copy and paste that code into your salesletter.html template. You can place the code anywhere between the <body> and </body> tags. I recommend placing it directly before the </body> tag.

Advanced Tip: This technique is optional, but powerful. If you want to track traffic conversions based on affiliate, you can do so using Conversion Gold. To do this we want to set the 'tag' variable to the affiliates PayPal email address. Look in your tracking code for section that looks like &tag=. Change that to &tag=<?=$_REQUEST['aff'] ?>. This will dynamically assign the affiliate PP email as a tag. You can then view the Tags report to see how traffic and conversions break down by affiliate. This enables you to quickly spot the best affiliates, and you can email them to offer support, thanks, etc.

Step 2 - Get Conversion Tracking Code

After copying and pasting the Tracking Code, you should click the "Step 2 - Get Conversion Page Code" link. (Note: since you want to track three types of conversions, you will want to repeat step 2 three times.)

Conversion Tracking Code is code that you should place only on the conversion "thank you" page(s). The "thank you" page is the page that visitors land on after they have converted (submitted a lead, purchased a product, etc.) Thank You pages should only be accessible to those visitors who have just converted.

You should now see a screen like:

There are seven fields for conversion tracking code, but "Description" is the most important.

Type - The type of conversion you would like to track. You can choose anything you want but some examples are lead, opt-in, sign-up, or sale. (Optional)

Description - Short description for this conversion. This should be unique to the specific product or action. Example: Car Washing Report Sale.

Value - The dollar value for this conversion, if applicable. For example, if the conversion is for a product sale in which you earn $7, enter 7 for the dollar value. (Optional)

Custom1, Custom2, Custom3 - These are optional custom fields that you may want to use to store additonal information about the conversion. You may want to leave it blank for now and then dynamically insert a value later, such as a customer id or transaction number.

Email Notification - If you check this box, you will receive an email notification every time a conversion occurs.

For the "Buy $7 Product" conversion goal, you may use the name of the product as the description (ie. "My Report") and enter "sale" as the type. For the value, enter 7.00 (no dollar sign) if you are selling it for $7, or enter the sale price if different.

For the "Opt-in to Email List" conversion goal, you can use something like "My List Subscription" and enter "opt-in" as the type. For the value, enter 0.00, since you don't earn any money when somebody subscribes to your mailing list (that part comes later!).

For the "Buy One-Time-Offer (OTO) Product" conversion goal, you may use the name of the OTO product as the description (ie. "My Report Resale Rights") and enter "sale" as the type. For the value, enter enter the sale price of the OTO.

Now click the "Get Conversion Tracking Code" button, and you will be taken to a page that with the conversion code, such as:

Copy and paste the code into your conversion "thank you" pages, between the <body and </body> tags.

For $7 Scripts sites, place the each of the conversion codes as follows:

download.html - Here you can place both the "Buy $7 Product" and "Opt-in to Email List", since people arriving at this page have purchased the report and opted-in via the squeeze page. (Alternatively, if you want to track opt-in only after they have confirmed their email address, you can put the opt-in code on the page the subscriber lands on after confirming. This may be configurable via you autoresponder service or program).

downloadoto.html - On this template you can place all three conversion code blocks, one after the other. After someone has purchased the OTO, it means they have already purchased the main product and opted in to your list, AND purchased the OTO.

Step 3 - Check your Reports

After you have placed both the Tracking Code and Conversion Tracking Code on your templates, you are all set up and ready to track visitors and conversions. Now you can login to your account and view your reports.

Note: if you have multiple $7 Secrets sites, repeat the steps above for each of them. One of the powerful features of Conversion Gold is that you can track visitors and conversions across multiple sites from the same control panel and reporting interface. This helps you quickly spot your top performing sites, products, and affiliates -- and it even shows you when visitors jump from one of your sites to another!
